6 Tricks to Web Design Using Free Website Templates
Want to make kick ass websites using free templates? So does everyone else – so you need to take a moment to get the advice of the experts before you jump off the deep end. Follow these 6 top tips and you’ll get off to a flying start:
1: SEO is still top of the list. Make sure your titles, tags and headings are in order before you do anything else. If you follow wise naming conventions for your titles your site will be tasty to search engine spiders. Use the title tag on each page but keep your names distinct, original and clear.
2: Think like a person with a machine in his head. Your website has to be friendly for people to use – and it has to do everything that search engine spiders, which try to think like human beings but aren’t, wants it to do. Frames are a good example of something that doesn’t work for either – they look ugly, they’re clunky, and search engine spiders don’t understand what they are.
3: Layer your information. Add ALT attributes to links and pictures – it gives your user more information and so makes her experience more satisfying. And (remember those search engine spiders) it gets you indexed better because your site contains more concentrations of complementary information.
4: No tables, no problem: tables are ugly, slow to load and basically pointless. Keep them out of your design and the site will load quicker, look better and be friendlier to both humans and robots.
5: Still with the humans and the bots – get your headings running smoothly. Start with H1 for the key heading – the one that tells your audience and your web spider what you page is about – and arrange your content accordingly. H1 then introduction; H2 then the first bit of content – and so on until you get to H6. Page hierarchy = happy bots and easy to read content.
6: Try using a footer sitemap to help search engine spiders crawl you properly. The bots love the sitemap – and what are called “breadcrumbs”, too – which are the nested links you see that show you how you have arrived at your current page.
