Troubleshooting Tips for WordPress Themes
Are you encountering problems with your WordPress theme? Usually, you can troubleshoot on what the problem is in just a few moments by yourself.
The great thing you should know about WordPress is that it works great when it’s out the box! While your current theme is encountering problems, its content wont be displayed normally and would appear rather messy, loading problems will be encountered, as well as errors like error 404 that displays the content is missing or clicking or certain things breaks stuff – below are a couple of tips and hints on what to do when your theme is broken and how to get it working again in no time.
1. Deactivate all plugins. Reload your blog page or website when encountering this problem. Does your site work now? If so, activate all the plugin one by one while reloading your blog page each time- and when you encounter the one that breaks it- then that is your problem. (Deactivate this one and delete it since it’s the one causing problems). If that doesn’t help, try moving on to step 2.
2. While all plugins are still deactivated – try to activate and revert to the “default” WordPress theme. Does it work now? If it does – you have hacked your theme and broken it. Now try to download a fresh copy (or just switch themes). If this doesn’t solve the problem, try doing step 3.
3. Links to your own blog pages don’t work? Go to “Settings->Permalinks” and just hit “save” to update them and their functions again. Are they working now? If issues are still there, try continuing to the next step.
4. Blank pages blank WordPress dashboard login – or can’t login: check your wp-config file first and make sure that it’s there and has the proper connection information. Now try to Reupload all the WordPress core files again to check if one was corrupted, and check your theme page once again. If problems still remain try moving to step 5.
5. Contact your web host immediately for problems. If you’re still encountering problems with your web page or blog, the first thing I would do is to try to contact your web host and inquire if any recent upgrades were made to the server you’re hosted on.
Most of the time, upgrades to Apache or security rules can damage and disorganize WordPress sites, and at instances like these, you might not be the only customer affected.
If the 5 steps weren’t able to solve your problems, try to search the WordPress Support Forum and Codex – there’s a huge chance you might find someone with the exact same problem as yours and has already found a solution to that common problem!
There’s a 98% chance that you’re WordPress theme breaks it’s something rather simple actually, and the steps above will aid you in getting your page back in business again.
If you’re already in there mucking around with themes and plugins – then I would also advise that you try to read my WordPress Security Guide for DIY info on how to enhance securiuty and harden your blog against errors and viruses.
