How do you choose the best theme for your blog? Choosing the best theme invloves finding a balance of content, design and function. There are thousands of themes to choose from and there are some basic patterns that all have.

The first step to choosing a theme is to know the reason for your blog. It is important that you know your purpose in order to know what to optimize for. If you are sharing you feelings and ideas you need to put a premium on browsing, organizing, searching and sharing posts.

If you really don’t know where to start, start with a two column templage. With three columns it s more difficult to create a clean look as there are more moving parts. Content will also drive your choice of theme. Are you going to use pictures? How long will your articles or blogs be? Will they vary? All these issues will have a large impact on how you theme will look and feel. Remember that your theme is what gets the initial attention but your posts are the real impact of your site. Be sure that your posts are readable in all aspects: in depth, skimming, long, short, etc.

Play with how you use pictures. You can dramatically change a themes appearance by adding pictures on the posts or in the banner. Pictures help your readers get an idea of the topic without reading. When you use images in your banner and your posts your users have a hard time focusing. A good picture at the front of your post will draw your reader in especially if they are tired or scanning text.

Experiment with key scenarios for all users that include those reading, commenting, scanning and reading your posts, searching and browsing your blog. When you can pick simplicity over complexity. When you look at your blog where do your eyes focus? Is it hard to find a particular post?

When you look at your site if something doesn’t look or feel right, trust your instinct, it probably isn’t. When you recognize an issue you are on your way to resolving it. Change anything that is not working. When you experiment you will open new doors and will end up with a better site.
